MPs spent over £30000 on electricity expenses: About 200 MPs allegedly claimed nearly £30,000 in energy costs for their second homes in the first five months of last year, despite experts warning that a perfect storm of energy price spikes may strain family budgets to the breaking point throughout the UK.

The MPs claimed these expenditures through Parliament’s expenses system, according to The Mirror.

According to the Daily Mail, MPs charged taxpayers up to £3,500 for their second house energy expenditures.

According to data from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), claims for utilities totaled £262,454 in 2019–2020.

Almost £206,717 of this was for gas, electricity, and other sorts of fuel.

“The 554 MPs for constituencies outside of London are in the unusual position of having to work in two places — their constituency and London. Because of this, non-London MPs have an accommodation budget to help to cover the cost of somewhere to stay in one of these locations.” An IPSA Spokesperson said.

“The accommodation budget can cover rent and bills. If an MP owns the second property they cannot use the budget for mortgage payments but they can claim a proportion of utility costs to support their role as an MP.”

According to an investigation conducted by The Independent in October, members of Parliament spent roughly £70,000 on congestion charge and ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) levies in the most recent full fiscal year.
