Obsolete nuclear vessel 100% recycled 1st time in UK: For the first time in a UK fleet, a specialist nuclear vessel has been completely recycled.

Oceanic Pintail was conducted by Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) and gave Dales Marine Services the duty of recycling the 3,865-tonne vessel.

All parts of it eventually became recycled & reused, which the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has emphasised can become a further means to improve governmental net zero ambitions.

Concrete & tiles were crushed to make equipment for the construction industry, insulation was transformed into electrical energy, oils were extracted from water & soil was to be used as furnace fuel.

Oceanic Pintail 1st set sail 33 years ago, helping customers worldwide with nuclear transport issues, and took its last journey on November 2020.

Peter Buchan, NTS Shipping Director, stated: “We set our contractors, Dales Marine, an incredibly ambitious recycling target. They took that challenge & set the standard for others to follow when it comes to decommissioning vessels.

It’s a fantastic achievement, especially considering the work was completed in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, so a lot of thanks must go to everyone who has played a role in ensuring this project has been a huge success.
