Thousands of homes without power due to Storms

Thousands of homes without power due to Storms: In the aftermath of Storm Malik and Storm Corrie, around 16,000 houses in Scotland and north east England were still without power on Sunday evening.

The Scottish Government estimates that Storm Malik’s gusts of up to 90mph knocked down electricity to around 98,000 homes.

“The power companies have drafted in a large number of additional engineers and are making significant inroads into reconnecting customers.” said Deputy First Minister John Swinney

“Our teams have made good progress on the 19,000 customers that were without power on Sunday morning — 7,000 customers are still without power.” Said Northern Powergrid.

“We have confirmed that there is around 200 damage points on the low voltage network that will reconnect only a small number of customers for each repair.” Said Northern Powergrid Director Paul Glendinning.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) announced on Sunday evening that it was still on red alert for its customers in the north of Scotland while its staff responded to “severe damages.”

“As of 8pm this evening, power has been successfully restored to around 64,000 customers affected by Storm Malik, with around 9,000 customers remaining off supply following yesterday’s extreme weather.” Said the company.
