Turkey’s Coal mines to solar plants could power up to 6.9m

Turkey’s Coal mines to solar plants could power up to 6.9m: Turkey’s plans to convert half of their coal mines into solar farms could allow 6.9 million homes to be powered by renewables.
This claim made by Europe Beyond Coal, would lead to a 170% increase in solar generation in Turkey.
The Report made states that around 25% of turkey’s greenhouse gasses are produced by there coal mining indsutry, so a conversion of half to solar plants would be good both for net zero goals and the health of its citizens.
Duygu Kutluay a Europe Beyond Coal campaigner stated — “The mines that have provided the coal which has so damaged our climate and communities can play a vital role in decarbonising our energy systems & tackling the climate crisis. Turkey has recently upped its climate ambitions by ratifying the Paris Agreement and setting a net zero goal. The sooner we start delivering on these targets, the greater the benefits will be for our health and our economy, which was hit hard by last year’s climate change-induced wildfires.”
